The Womb Twin Survivors Project

item3

The loss of a twin before birth takes many forms but the most common is the so-called "vanishing" twin pregnancy.

This image shows a 3D scan of a twin pregnancy at 9 weeks. The stronger Alpha twin is moving vigorously in the lower gestational sac, while the weaker, Beta twin in the upper sac is still and unmoving and the heartbeat is no longer detectable. By the 12-week scan there will be little or no evidence to show that the Beta twin was ever there.

Twins do not "vanish": they die, leaving a lonely sole survivor.
