Day 11: Hornillos de Camino

Well, I am now in a very quiet, very wild spot. Looking around me I can see nothing but wheat fields and rocks and mountains. Now we have got beyond Burgos we have moved into a completely different country. There have been wheat fields all the way so far, but this is so dry. This is getting hotter and hotter and drier and drier.

And it was quite astonishing that everything changed as soon as we got out of Burgos. We are now going into a place where there were fewer bars to get a drink; fewer villages to get food; less water. And I think it might be worth considering this as a kind of "peeling off of layers". And I think now we're moving into a deeper layer and the topics that I will be discussing with you are going to be more painful; more challenging; requiring perhaps some quite uncompromising self examination.

I would recommend to you that you consider yourself out on the wild road, and if we are going to learn from this we must keep going, we mustn't give up. We must dare to look a little deeper. We must stir the mud at the bottom of the pond, because in the mud at the bottom of the pond are the nuggets of gold that will contribute to your growth.
